I am 6 months pregnant. Do you think it is worthwhile to sign up for a breastfeeding class?
I have been teaching prenatal breastfeeding classes for 15 years so, as you can imagine, I am a big proponent of breastfeeding classes! While there is a lot to read about breastfeeding online and in books, it is not a substitute for talking to a lactation consultant. Classes especially focus on latching and the best nursing positions for optimal feeding so new moms have a basis of what to expect during those early days of nursing. We also discuss pumping and which type of pump will be the right fit for each new mom. Additionally, in your breastfeeding class you should learn the importance and functionality of a supportive, comfortable and well-fitting nursing bra. Having personal interaction with a lactation consultant can help calm concerns and fears you have about breastfeeding because you will be able to ask your specific questions as they arise.
It is important to have your support person – be it daddy, your partner, a relative or a friend – with you in your breastfeeding class for reinforcement since he/she will be with you in the early days and nights of parenting. Attending a prenatal breastfeeding class or breastfeeding support group (which many hospitals offer) also allows you to meet other like-minded expectant or new moms.
